Feed in Tariffs

On February 1st 2010 the Government finally announced the introduction of Feed in Tariffs 'FITS'for householders wish to install Photovoltaic panels

Ed Miliband said:

"The guarantee of getting an income on top of saving on energy bills will be an incentive to householders and communities wanting to make the move to low carbon living."

"The feed-in tariff will change the way householders and communities think about their future energy needs, making the payback for investment far shorter than in the past."

What does it mean?

In order to help reach its low carbon obligations the government has agreed to pay a premium for electricity produced by photovoltaic panels.

I checked out my bills and using British gas for my electricity, I pay around 11p per Kw for the electricity I buy. Fitting 10 off PV panels to my house will provide 2000kwp ( kilowatts per hour peak) and so allowing for 6 hours daylight per day at say 60% of maximum sunlight, I could expect to produce 1600kwh per annum.

The government, through my energy provider will pay me 41.6p per kwh and so I will earn approximately £650 from my installation. On top of this they will pay me an extra 3p for energy put into the grid above the energy that I have used.

What's even better is that you if you use all of the energy that I produce then I will save a further £160.00.

The payments are protected against inflation by being linked to the RPI.

The scheme is guaranteed for 25 years for those people who take advantage of it, even if it changes at a late date, so the bottom line is what does it cost?

Lowest ever prices

Despite the huge increase in demand in the UK , there is a worldwide over capacity in photovoltaic production, and so the price of a typical install is now lower that at any time!

Last year the price of a typical 2000watt install was around £12,000, so that even with the grants that were available the cost was £5000 per kilowatt, i.e. £10,000 net.

The price that we are currently able to install a 2kw system, using top quality panels (Sharp, Kyocera or Kyoto) and a German inverter (Sunny Boy or Fronius) start at just £7,950.00

Even cheaper prices are available using Chinese sourced panels......................
